As part of this years’ The Lantern City celebrating Lunar New Year, Pendulum Gallery is hosting a solo exhibition featuring Taiwanese manhua artist Ruan Guang-min. The Lantern City is a celebration of the Lunar New Year taking place in various locations across Vancouver in January and February 2025. Artists from a wide range of creative and cultural backgrounds work with the festival to produce large-scale illuminated lanterns featuring their artwork.

Ruan's graphic novels vividly depict the local Taiwanese culture and way of life using a strong graphic style to capture personalities and settings, with the characters in the stories presented in an insightful and humorous way. The exhibition includes drawings, books, and videos and features a series of large hanging lanterns suspended within the exhibition featuring well-known characters from his graphic books and comics.

Ruan Guang-Min is the recipient of several prestigious Taiwanese awards for both his graphic book work and the adaption of his books into Television and Theatre productions. Dong Hua Chun Barbershop has been adapted into an acclaimed TV serial drama. His books include Legends of Assassins, Dung Hua Chun Barbershop, Seasoning of Happiness, Heaven Restaurant Ep1~3, Between Police and Thieves, and Yong Jiou Grocery Store (which was adapted to a play). He also adapts Taiwanese literature into graphic comics form. Recent works include: The Illusionist on the Skywalk and Other Short Stories by Wu Ming-Yi, The Steelyard by Lai ho, and A Small Town Planted with Papaya Tree (Japanese Colonial Era) by Long Ying-zong.
